The HP LaserJet 1200 printer comes in three models. The standard model is the C7044A base model. There is also the special edition 1200 SE, model number C7047A. Model C7048A is the LaserJet 1200n bundle for networked printing. Each model comes with high quality LaserJet 1200 cartridge.

The most versatile versions of the 1200 are the 1220 and 1220SE models. These take the base or special edition LaserJet 1200 printer and add hardware and software to create a combination scanner, printer and copier. One can also add scan and copy capabilities with the C7046A, a compatible peripheral.

HP is the company that invented laser printers for the mass market. They started way back in 1984. The LaserJet name was the name of the original laser printer for PCs. It had a ppm rate of eight and an eight MHz processor. The 128 kB of memory was shared with the controller.

Graphics capabilities were still a far off dream. The best the original LaserJet could manage were lines. But they were solid lines, not dotted ones. The ability of LaserJet technology to print solid characters was the chief attraction of HPs new kind of printer. Current models like the 1200 series print photo-quality graphics. That is because the 1200 has 15MB of hard drive at its disposal. The 1220 version needs a whopping one hundred and sixty.

Porting an HP LaserJet 1200 printer can be done to a USB port. It can also use a parallel port that is bi directional and compliant with either the ECP or IEEE 1284 standards. These are the only acceptable ports.

In 1987 the LaserJet Series 2 was released by HP. This was the first tentative step towards a mass-market laser printer. The product targeted the small to medium size business market.

A half-size version of the Series Two was brought to market in the fall of 1989. The LaserJet IIP was a true consumer-level product. It was half the size of the original and sold for about half as much.

Today’s LaserJet 1200 printer is 16.3 inches wide, 19.1inches long and 10 inches high. The 1220 is the same width and length and is about six inches taller. Whether we are talking about the 1200 or the 1220, the print speed is the same. Letter size print jobs are done at a rate of fifteen ppm. Print jobs on legal size paper are at fourteen ppm.

HP pays attention to the environment. The 1200 series is designed to be energy efficient. In PowerSave mode, energy requirements lower considerably, saving energy without sacrificing up-time.

Additionally, HP LaserJet toners usage can be decreased using the EconoMode setting. Manual duplex allows for double-sided printing and the N-up feature enables the printing of two size-reduced pages per page. All plastic parts weighing more than twenty-five grams, just under one ounce, are stamped with the proper international number for recycling purposes.

Cartridge recycling is a company specialty, for LaserJet 1200 ink and toner and all HP toners. Addressed and postage stamped envelopes are part of all cartridge packaging. When the toner refills is empty, just pop it in the envelope and mail it back, free, in 25 different countries. HP takes care of the rest.
